JOB OVERVIEW

The Design Intern provides hands-on support to Sunrise Senior Living’s Design team on a variety of real-world interior design projects across a national portfolio of communities. Under the guidance of the Manager Design, this role contributes to the organization of design resources, including finish and fabric libraries, assists with sourcing and documenting materials and helps prepare project documentation, design boards and presentation materials. The Design Intern will also gain exposure to healthcare design standards, budgets, procurement processes and tracking systems. Additionally, the role participates in team meetings, vendor presentations and may assist with on-site installations, offering valuable experience in the senior living and healthcare design space.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS

 
Responsibilities:

• Learn and apply Sunrise’s brand standards, design guidelines and signature elements in all aspects of design support
• Assist with product selection, including interior finishes, furniture, lighting, artwork, accessories and other design components across multiple projects
• Support the project designers with furniture specifications and reselections, including coordination with construction drawing documents and vendor submittals
• Create / Edit installation guides and design presentations using Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat, following departmental templates and visual standards
• Participate in the organization and maintenance of the finish and fabric library, including ordering and cataloging material samples for project use
• Enter and maintain accurate data in project tracking systems as needed, including purchase order processing and shared design resource documents using Microsoft Office and internal platforms
• Assist in organizing project documentation and maintain design archives in support of team collaboration and compliance
• Support adherence to healthcare-related codes and regulations while maintaining Sunrise’s aesthetic and operational standards during the design process
• Meet established deadlines and support rapid response tasks under the direction of senior design team members
• Attend and participate in internal design meetings, vendor presentations and company-wide learning sessions to gain exposure to cross-functional collaboration
• May assist with site visits, installations and punch list reviews, including optional travel within the U.S. and Canada for hands-on project support
• Maintain compliance in assigned required training and all training required by state/province or other regulating authorities as applicable to this role to ensure that Sunrise standards are always met
• Perform other duties as assigned

• Basic knowledge of design principles, materials and space planning
• Demonstrated ability to accurately document information, organize materials and support project execution with a focus on quality and precision
• Willingness to take on a variety of tasks, adapt to changing priorities and show initiative in supporting senior design team members on multiple projects
• Strong interpersonal and listening skills, with the ability to take direction, ask questions and contribute effectively in a team-oriented environment
 

 

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed throughout this job description are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.

• Currently pursuing a degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture or a related field from an accredited program
• Completion of at least one AutoCAD or Revit course is required; familiarity with both is a plus
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat is required; experience with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with team members, vendors and service providers
• Comfortable working in a collaborative, open workspace and adapting to feedback in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
• Willingness to learn, take initiative and contribute to multiple projects simultaneously
