JOB OVERVIEW

The VP of Clinical Operations is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the skilled nursing operations portfolio as a whole. Responsible for planning, organizing, overseeing, and leading overall operations in accordance with federal, state and local standards and Sunrise Senior Living policies to promote the highest degree of quality care and services to our residents. May serve as interim Skilled Nursing Administrator for communities with open leadership positions, offering direct support to ensure continuity of care and operations.

Job Description


Essential Duties

  • Responsible for Oversight of Operational and Clinical Care Delivery Operations.

  • Provide strategic directions to Regional Leadership team who will support community Skilled Nursing Administrator to achieve organizational goals.

  • Build relationships with internal and external business partners (e.g., Therapy, Pharmacy, Medical Directors) as needed to ensure business continuity.

  • Oversee and support the regional team in preparing communities for surveys, audits, inspections, and implementing corrective action plans when necessary.

  • Responsible for Regional QAPI meetings and ensuring the team is meeting State and Federal guidelines as required.

  • Direct and supervise Sr. SNA and RDRC to oversee regional team members in the skilled nursing center.

  • Implement and monitor systems that ensure consistent delivery of quality resident services.

  • Oversee and implement staffing and scheduling patterns as needed to maintain continuity of resident care and regulatory compliance.

  • Assess and monitor clinical settings for effective and safe resident-centered care.

  • Facilitate effective communication between cross-functional teams and promote a team approach in the delivery of resident care.

  • Support SNF leaders in identifying the ongoing needs of residents to maintain the highest quality standards for well-being.

  • Ensure proper utilization of the Resident Care Plan by all team members.

  • Oversee and facilitate relationships with Hospice, Therapy, and other providers.

  • Participate in community awareness activities and community relationship development.

  • Assist in counseling residents, families, or responsible parties during difficult transitional care periods.



Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance



  • Strive for excellent quality care and service delivery as measured in the Quality Services Review (QSR) process and ensure timely corrective actions.

  • Research, document, and review all incidents of abuse, neglect, and misappropriation of funds; develop and implement plans of correction as appropriate.

  • Partner closely with the Sunrise Internal Audit Compliance Team.

  • Work with RDRC and Sr. SNA to ensure Quality Improvement meetings occur at each community as required.

  • Analyze Resident Care Standards of Care and Support Services to maintain quality resident care and clinical practice.

  • Review, develop, and implement plans of correction for concerns identified by pharmacy consultants.

  • Review and develop plans of correction with interdisciplinary teams to enhance quality of resident care.

  • Monitor each resident’s medication and treatment profile and medication pass process to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Review physician orders for accuracy and compliance at move-in and monthly thereafter.

  • Oversee pharmacy relationships to ensure quality assurance.

  • Ensure pharmacies follow state regulations for labeling, distribution, and identification of medications.

  • Develop thorough knowledge of current and evolving federal and state/provincial regulations for resident care and services.

  • Ensure community compliance with all state/provincial regulations pertaining to resident care and services.

  • Review, develop, and implement plans of correction for issues identified by regulators.

  • Complete and submit all monthly and quarterly reports in a timely manner.
  • Follow through on mock survey processes.



Financial Management



  • Assist in the presentation and value of Sunrise’s products and services for residents, families, team members, and referral sources.

  • Understand and manage department budgets, including labor and expenses, and their impact on community financial performance.

  • Review monthly financial statements and implement action plans to address deficiencies.

  • Process and submit monthly expenses and budget data in accordance with Sunrise policies and internal controls.

  • Oversee and coordinate with Sr. SNA and RDRC to achieve staffing efficiencies and cross-training.

  • Understand internal costs associated with all Sunrise resident care programs.



Training, Leadership and Team Member Development



  • Manage the department, including recruiting, hiring, training, coaching, and discipline.

  • Partner in the delivery and participation in Sunrise University training and self-study programs.

  • Develop working knowledge of state regulations and ensure compliance through coaching and supervision.

  • Achieve Team Member Engagement goals and lead Engagement Improvement Planning sessions.

  • Complete staffing and scheduling according to operational and budgetary guidelines.

  • Review timekeeping practices and payroll reports daily to ensure accuracy.

  • Conduct timely performance appraisals with meaningful conversations.

  • Hold team members accountable and document corrective actions when necessary.

  • Attend regular meetings including Stand Up, Cross Over, Department Head, Town Hall, and Quality Improvement meetings.

  • Stay current on professional developments through reading, conferences, and training.

  • Maintain compliance in all required training to ensure Sunrise standards are met.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed throughout this job description are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.



  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, Nursing, or Business Administration required; master’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 2–3 years regional experience overseeing multiple skilled nursing facilities.

  • Minimum of 5–7 years’ experience as a skilled nursing administrator or senior leader in long-term care.

  • Proven experience managing multiple facilities.

  • Strong understanding of state and federal SNF regulations.

  • Knowledge of federal and state/provincial long-term care regulations.

  • Proficiency in Medicare, MDS/RAI, and Care Plan processes.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Skilled Nursing Administrator licensure in applicable states.

  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and implement improvement strategies.

  • Willingness to travel extensively (60–80%).

  • Ability to respond to emergencies and work flexible hours.

  • Ability to delegate assignments based on skills, roles, and interests.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including facilitation of small group presentations.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Demonstrates sound judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Sunrise applications with ability to learn new systems.
