JOB OVERVIEW

The Director of Housekeeping is responsible for providing overall leadership and management of the housekeeping and laundry operations. The primary responsibility includes maintaining a clean, safe, comfortable and inviting environment for residents, guests and team members throughout the community. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing and leading overall housekeeping and laundry operations and services in accordance with federal, state, local laws and Sunrise Senior Living quality service standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS

 

Essential Duties

The unique responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to the essential functions listed as follows:

Leadership

  • Plans, organizes, develops and leads the overall housekeeping/laundry operations in accordance with federal, state/provincial, local laws and Sunrise standards, guidelines and regulations.
  • Champions the housekeeping/laundry services and procedures and partners with community leadership ensuring housekeeping/laundry services and standards are achieved and maintained.
  • Develops work assignments for housekeeping/laundry team members.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Partners with leadership team to ensure community is in compliance with national/provincial regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety requirements and promotion of Risk Management programs and policies; monitors adherence to safety rules and regulations.
  • Ensures that safety procedures are practiced at all times including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Lockout Tagout procedures.
  • Ensures cleaning chemicals are kept locked and secured when not in use.
  • Ensures any cords, carts, equipment and other hazards are kept out of the way at all times, not blocking exits and in compliance with fire codes.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies to avoid waste, damage to areas and equipment and to prevent accidents.
  • Ensures compliance with all infection control techniques, placement of bio-hazard containers and removal techniques and procedures and policies.

Housekeeping

  • Ensures all general housekeeping tasks in all full service, assisted living/long term care, reminiscence and/or skilled nursing center resident suites, public areas and support areas meets and/or exceeds Sunrise’s quality standards.
  • Ensures team members respect resident’s privacy by knocking on their suite doors and on public restroom doors during the cleaning process.
  • Oversees and develops job routines and instructions for all cleaning tasks.
  • Ensures that trash collection and removal and trash receptacles and collection areas are maintained in a clean, sanitary and timely manner.

Laundry

  • Ensures community laundry is collected, cleaned and redistributed.
  • Ensures linens are properly sorted, spotted, washed and dried following approved laundry procedures.
  • Ensures linens are properly folded, counted and stacked following approved laundry procedures.
  • Monitors and evaluates quality of linens and routinely inspects for stains, wear and tear and discards per operating procedures for damaged linens.
  • Ensures laundry equipment is maintained in a clean, sanitary condition and operates per manufacturer’s standards.

Resident Services and Admin

  • Reviews, reads, notates and initializes the Building Management Platform and Maintenance Log to document and learn about pertinent information and about housekeeping/laundry activities.
  • Ensures effective Cross Over meetings are performed.
  • Ensures inventories are conducted of cleaning equipment, replenished as needed.
  • Partners with maintenance team and/or approved vendors to facilitate the repair of equipment.
  • Provides leadership and actively participates in all fire and safety drills, in-service meetings and department programs.

Financial Management

  • Assists in the presentation and value of Sunrise’s products and services for our residents, families and team members and targeted referral sources.
  • Understands, manages the department budget to include labor/labour and other expenses and its impact on the community’s bottom line.
  • Reviews monthly financial statements and implements plans of action for deficiencies.
  • Processes and submits monthly expenses and budget data timely per Sunrise policies and internal business controls.
  • Coordinates with the community team to achieve maximum staff economies and cross training when applicable.
  • Understands the internal cost associated with all Sunrise resident care programs.
  • Manages large scale capital projects and services, partnering with vendors as appropriate.

Training, Leadership and Team Member Development

  • Manages the department, including but not limited to: recruiting, hiring, training, coaching and disciplining.
  • Partners in the delivery and participation in Sunrise University Training and self-study programs during the required timeframe.
  • Develops a working knowledge of state/provincial regulations and ensures compliance through supervising and coaching team members.
  • Achieves the Team Member Engagement goals and actively leads in the Engagement Improvement Planning sessions.
  • Completes team member staffing and scheduling according to operational and budgetary guidelines.
  • Review daily timekeeping practices and payroll reports to ensure all hours worked are recorded and appropriately paid.
  • Conducts timely performance appraisals with meaningful conversations.
  • Holds team accountable and corrects actions when necessary and documents.
  • Attends regular meetings; Stand Up, Cross Over, Weekly Leadership Meetings, Town Hall, Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI), one on one, Town Hall, Quality Improvement, and others as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Keeps abreast of professional developments in the field by reading, attending conferences and training sessions.
  • Maintains compliance in assigned required training and all training required by state/province or other regulating authorities as applicable to this role to ensure that Sunrise standards are always met.

Experience and Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed throughout this job description are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.

  • Two (2) years supervisory and management experience including hiring staff, coaching, performance management daily operations supervision, discipline and counseling.
  • Three (3) years housekeeping/laundry operations experience preferably in assisted living/long term care, full service, skilled nursing and/or hospitality industries.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to delegate assignments to the appropriate individuals based on their skills, roles and interests.
  • Possess written and verbal skills for effective communication and the ability to facilitate small group presentations.
  • Competent in organizational, time management skills.
  • Demonstrates good judgment, problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Demonstration of proficiency in computer skills, Microsoft Office (Windows, Outlook, Excel) and Sunrise applications with the ability to learn new applications.
  • As applicable, all Sunrise team members who drive a Sunrise vehicle must review and sign the Driver job description and understand the key essential duties for safety and regulatory compliance
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings and flexible hours, available for our customers at peak service delivery days and times
